Programme NotesNotice de programme
Carillon Prelude began as my New Year's greeting for 2009. The composer Carson Cooman suggested that I expand the postcard-sized piece into a longer work. The work is dedicated to him in thanks. The opening marcato figure alternates with a more songlike motive, with a continuous sixteenth note movement in the left hand. The pianist should strive for a bell-like sound, especially in the longer notes of the bass line.

Carson Cooman (b. 1982) is the most extensively published living composer in the Musik Fabrik catalogue, with more than 200 published works, and recordings on Naxos, Albany, Zimbel, MSR Classics, Altarus, Artek, and Beauport Classics. He studied at Harvard University and Carnegie Mellon, with composition studies under Bernard Rands, Judith Weir, Alan Fletcher, and James Willey.
Cooman wrote six works specifically for Paul Wehage — Dances of the Holy Fool, Of Songs and Swirls, In the Fire of Images, As To The Sun, Silent Prisms, and Passion Canticle — and the Wehage–Cooman relationship also extends to the literary: Cooman's songs Aux Tuileries and Rossini aux Fourneaux carry texts by Jean-Thierry Boisseau. Wehage reciprocated by writing the Suite Latignacienne for organ for Cooman.
The Carillon Prelude adds a further dimension to this relationship: it is the work where Cooman functions not as performer or subject but as editor and instigator — the colleague whose suggestion turned a greeting card into a published composition.
