The English horn — neither English nor a horn but a tenor oboe in F — has one of the most distinctive timbres in the orchestra: warm, slightly nasal, with a melancholy depth that no other instrument replicates. It is the instrument of complainte and pastoral music: Berlioz's Harold in Italy, Dvořák's New World slow movement, Sibelius's Swan of Tuonela. The title Complainte Bucolique (Pastoral Lament) is perfectly matched to the instrument's natural character — a lament that belongs outdoors, in the open field rather than the concert hall.
Le cor anglais — ni anglais ni un cor mais un hautbois ténor en fa — a l'un des timbres les plus distinctifs de l'orchestre : chaud, légèrement nasillard, avec une profondeur mélancolique qu'aucun autre instrument ne reproduit. C'est l'instrument de la complainte et de la musique pastorale : Harold en Italie de Berlioz, le mouvement lent du Nouveau Monde de Dvořák, le Cygne de Tuonela de Sibelius. Le titre Complainte Bucolique (Lamentation Pastorale) est parfaitement adapté au caractère naturel de l'instrument — une complainte qui appartient à l'extérieur, dans le champ ouvert plutôt que dans la salle de concert.
