English

Four Sketches for B♭ Trumpet and Euphonium was written for and is dedicated to Éric and François Segura, President and Archivist of the Municipal Band of Clichy-la-Garenne. The work is written in a contrapuntal, extended-tonal style and is in four movements. The first movement, Invention, uses canonic writing and imitative counterpoint. Valse Lente is a slowly expressive waltz with the two instruments presenting the melody in the different sections. Berceuse begins as a soft cradlesong, but gradually the music becomes more expansive before returning to the first theme to end the movement quietly. The final Marche is a jaunty, stylised comic march in which the theme is passed between the two instruments. Passages involving hocketing underlined by articulation effects create rhythmic tension before the piece comes to a close.

Invention
Canonic · ContrapuntalCanonique · Contrapuntique
Canonic writing and imitative counterpoint — the Invention is a reference to the Baroque keyboard invention, most famously Bachʼs Two- and Three-Part Inventions: short contrapuntal pieces in which a single motif is worked through imitative dialogue between voices. Here the two instruments of the duo play the role of two voices in a Baroque invention, each following and answering the other in strict imitative counterpoint. The title and form connect the work to a venerable tradition of pedagogical and artistic counterpoint.

Valse Lente
Slow waltz · ExpressiveValse lente · Expressive
A slowly expressive waltz in which the two instruments share the melody, passing it between them through the different sections of the movement. The waltz — the same form deployed in the second movement of the Clarinet Sonata, and with a particular nostalgic charge in French music — here becomes a vehicle for lyrical dialogue between the two brass voices.

Berceuse
Cradlesong · Expansive middle · ReturnBerceuse · Milieu expansif · Retour
Begins as a soft cradlesong — gentle, rocking, the euphonium's warm low register providing a natural lullaby quality. The music gradually becomes more expansive in the central section, departing from the intimate berceuse world before returning to the first theme to end the movement quietly. This ABA-like form gives the Berceuse a sense of departure and homecoming — the cradlesong heard differently after the journey away from it.

A jaunty, stylised comic march — a pas-redoublé without pretension, an atmosphere of divertissement. The march theme is passed between the two instruments in dialogue; hocketing passages underlined by articulation effects create rhythmic tension as the piece advances, the rhythmic figures recurring with increasing frequency before the close. The finale has the character of a witty send-off — the wind band tradition of the comic march deployed for two soloists.

The four movements are available in three instrumental versions — each pairing a higher instrument with a lower instrument from the same family, creating a different timbral blend while the musical content remains identical. The brass version (trumpet and euphonium) is the primary version, connected to the Clichy band dedication; the clarinet and saxophone versions extend the work's reach to different performers and contexts.

Paul Wehage directs two wind bands in the Paris region: the Orchestre d'Harmonie de Clichy-la-Garenne and the band at Lagny-sur-Marne. The dedication of Four Sketches to Éric and François Segura — President and Archivist of the Clichy band — reflects the close creative relationship between the composer-conductor and the people who make the ensemble function. The work, composed for brass duo, grows naturally from the world of the wind band: the trumpet and euphonium are central instruments of the harmonie tradition, and the final Marche in particular draws on the comic march idiom that is the wind band's natural register of good humour and festivity.
