During the construction of the new Pôle Musique (Musical Centre) at the City of Lagny-sur-Marne, a large green hoarding enclosed the construction site. The town workers painted a musical theme on this hoarding — not musicians themselves, as evidenced by their substituting a G clef for what was originally an F clef in their model. The resulting theme is somewhat unusual but interesting in its non-respect of usual musical rules.

Paul Wehage passed by this wall several times a week for several months. He decided to take this accidental civic theme as the subject of a series of variations — each one an image of a different aspect of the town of Lagny. The title of the work refers to the hoarding itself: les palissades mystérieuses — the mysterious palisades — a phrase that also echoes Couperin's Les Barricades Mystérieuses, situating the work in the tradition of French characteristic keyboard music.

The dedication honours both an individual — Madame Martine Hamot, with respectful homage — and collectively the agents of the technical services of the City of Lagny-sur-Marne: the very workers who painted the theme on the construction hoarding, and who are thus, however unknowingly, co-creators of the work.

English

This work was written during the construction of the new Musical Centre at the City of Lagny-sur-Marne. The title is a reference to a large green wall which surrounded the construction site, upon which the town workers had written a musical theme, which forms the basis for this work. As the theme was not written by people with any musical knowledge — who, for example, substituted the G clef for what was originally an F clef in their model — it is somewhat unusual, but interesting in its non-respect of usual musical rules. The composer passed by the wall several times each week for several months and decided to use this theme in a series of variations, each of which forms an image of an aspect of the town itself.

The civic theme · Written on the hoardingLe thème civique · Écrit sur la palissade
The theme itself — written on the green construction hoarding by town workers with no formal musical training. Its unusual character (including the clef substitution) gives it the quality of an accidental found object: a musical idea that no professional composer would have written, and which for that reason is fresh, unpredictable, and generative. All seven variations grow from this civic accident.

Dawn Over the Marne
A calm view of the Marne river between the two bridges connecting Lagny to the neighbouring towns of Pomponne and Thorigny, in the early hours of the morning. The river at dawn — still, reflective, the light just beginning — is one of the most characteristic images of Lagny, a town that takes its name from its position on the Marne.

Outdoor Games
Children playing in the Square Foucher en Careil — and, the programme note specifies, an indirect homage to Germaine Tailleferre. The connection between childhood play and Tailleferre's lightness of touch, her capacity for delight and irony, is Wehage's editorial observation — Tailleferre, whose music Wehage published and edited, inhabiting the same world of French wit and outdoor energy as this image of children in a square.

Mr. Bloy Goes to Mass
The French Catholic writer and polemicist Léon Bloy (1846–1917) spent several years in Lagny and was remarked both for his great piety and his fierce criticism of the townspeople — whom he immortalised in Quatre ans de Captivité à Cochons-sur-Marne (Four Years of Captivity in Pigs-on-the-Marne), his satirical name for Lagny. He is immortalised in turn in the rather acid discourse of this variation — which, the programme note implies, describes him walking to Mass with the same piety and severity he directed at his neighbours.

Young Girls in Flowers...
The title evokes Proust's À l'Ombre des Jeunes Filles en Fleurs — but the programme note is explicit: these are not Proust's young girls, despite the proximity of Guermantes to Lagny. They are the young women who danced and served at a memorable town gathering just before this work was written. The Proustian title is an ironic frame: Proust's summer guests become Lagny's civic festivity.

At the Ball of Madame the Under-prefect
An image of the "Louis-Philipparde" atmosphere of the Salons d'Honneur of the Town Hall — the formal reception rooms of the Mairie of Lagny, with their Second Republic grandeur and provincial solemnity. The term Louis-Philipparde (from the reign of Louis-Philippe, 1830–1848) evokes a bourgeois solemnity, slightly pompous, slightly stiff — the atmosphere of the official ball where civic dignity is maintained with considerable effort.

Interrupted Dreaming
A short, dreamlike cadenza for the saxophone that is constantly interrupted by more humorous interjections — the saxophone trying to sustain a lyrical reverie while the piano repeatedly punctures it with comic intrusions. The movement leads without pause to the finale: the dream broken, the hunt begins.

Variation VII · FinaleVariation VII · Finale
Alla Caccia
In Hunting Style
The finale — inspired by the hunting horns of the Town Band (the Orchestre d'Harmonie de Lagny-sur-Marne, which Wehage directs). Alla caccia is a Baroque and Classical term for a piece in hunting-horn style — energetic, fanfare-like, outdoors. The work ends where it began: in the civic world of Lagny, but now in festive, open-air mode, the saxophonist-conductor celebrating his town with a final flourish of his own instrument.
