English

Sky Vision for solo trumpet was written for and dedicated to the French trumpeter Nicolas Cambon. The work begins with a slow improvisatory section with "interrupting" elements which lead into the second "Scherzando" section, which features the same motives introduced at the beginning in triplet figures. Out of this texture a two-voice invention is created which becomes more and more intricate until finally a brief climax brings back the opening free section to bring the work to a quiet close.

A slow, improvisatory opening in which the trumpet moves freely — the character of an unaccompanied cadenza or recitative. Into this free material come "interrupting" elements — figures that cut into the flow, asserting a different rhythmic or melodic character. These interruptions are not mere ornaments: they carry the seeds of the Scherzando that follows, establishing the motivic material that will be transformed in the central section. The opening section establishes a mood of spacious, visionary freedom — the "sky vision" of the title.

The central section, which grows out of the opening material's interruptions, is marked Scherzando — playful, light-footed, quicksilver. The same motives introduced at the beginning now appear in triplet figures, giving them a new rhythmic character. From this triplet texture emerges a two-voice invention: the trumpet, playing alone, suggests two simultaneous voices through melodic registral separation — a technique with roots in Bach's solo violin and cello works. This invention becomes more and more intricate as the two voices develop their dialogue, building in complexity until a brief climax marks the turning point of the arch.

After the climax, the opening free section returns, completing the arch. The improvisatory character of the opening is recalled — the trumpet returns to its spacious, unhurried mode — and the work is brought to a quiet close. The return is not a simple repeat: it is a return after experience, the opening material now heard in the context of everything that followed it. The quiet ending resolves the energy of the climax not in triumph but in stillness — the sky vision recedes as calmly as it began.
