American organist and composer (b. 1982). The dedication is especially fitting here: Cooman is an organist by training and practice, and the Sonata da Chiesa was written for his instrument. He premièred the work himself at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Rochester, New York on 14 November 2005. The Sonata da Chiesa was composed in the same month — May 2005 — as the companion work Sonate en Forme de Trio for oboe, clarinet and bassoon, also dedicated to Cooman.

English
The Sonata da Chiesa for organ is dedicated to the American organist and composer Carson P. Cooman. The work is written as a neo-classical Trio Sonata in an expanded tonal style. The four movements follow the typical da chiesa sonata form of slow–fast–slow–fast. The initial Arioso style of the first movement is followed by a fugato-style Allegro. The third movement is a canon in the two manuals accompanied by the pedals to provide a harmonic base. The final Presto is in an Italianate concertante style to end the piece brilliantly.

The sonata da chiesa ("church sonata") is the defining chamber form of the Italian Baroque — the pattern of slow–fast–slow–fast used by Corelli, Handel, and their contemporaries for works to be performed in church services. By adopting this four-movement plan, Wehage positions the work explicitly within the church music tradition that the organ embodies: an instrument whose natural home is the nave, whose repertoire extends from the Renaissance to the present, and whose most characteristic chamber form has been the trio sonata. The da chiesa pattern adds a fourth movement and an additional slow opening to the three-movement structure of the companion Sonate en Forme de Trio, giving the organ work a grander, more ceremonial scale.

The organ is the ideal instrument for a trio sonata: a single player can realise all three voices simultaneously — the two manual voices and the pedal bass — achieving the full trio texture without any additional performers. This self-sufficiency is part of what has made the organ trio sonata a central form in the instrument's solo repertoire from Bach's six trio sonatas (BWV 525–530) to the present. Wehage exploits this property throughout, especially in the third movement, where the strict canon at the fourth between the two manuals is underpinned by the pedals providing the harmonic base — exactly as described in the programme note.

Both the
Sonata da Chiesa and the
Sonate en Forme de Trio for wind trio were composed in
May 2005, dedicated to
Carson P. Cooman, and share the same neo-classical trio sonata aesthetic and expanded tonal language. The wind trio has three movements (Allegro · Adagio-Canon · Presto); the organ sonata adds an opening
Grave to create the full four-movement
da chiesa pattern. Movements II–IV of the organ sonata correspond closely to the three movements of the wind trio, transposed into the idiom of the organ with its manuals and pedals in place of the three wind instruments.

The opening Grave — heavy, solemn, processional — is in an Arioso style: expressive, song-like, melodically ornate in the way of a sung aria rather than abstract counterpoint. This is the movement unique to the organ version, absent from the wind trio: it fulfils the first "slow" of the da chiesa pattern, establishing the ceremonial gravity appropriate to a church sonata before the first fast movement begins. The Arioso character is well-suited to the organ's ability to sustain long melodic lines with controlled dynamic shaping.

A fugato-style Allegro in alla breve — fast cut-time counterpoint, the three voices of the organ (two manuals, pedals) entering in imitation to build an energetic, driving movement. The fugato texture — subjects and answers passing between voices — is one of the organ's most natural modes of discourse, rooted in the instrument's long association with contrapuntal forms. Corresponds to Movement I of the companion Sonate en Forme de Trio.

A strict canon at the fourth between the two manuals, with the pedals providing the harmonic base. Upper manual leads; lower manual follows at the fourth below in exact imitation. The pedals, freed from the canon, supply the harmonic and rhythmic foundation. This is the lyrical heart of the sonata — the strict canon form imposing a calm, disciplined beauty on the Adagio material. Corresponds to Movement II of the companion Sonate en Forme de Trio, where the canon was between oboe and clarinet with the bassoon as harmonic base: the same structural role now realised entirely within the organ.

An Italianate concertante Presto — fast, brilliant, virtuosic — to close the work with energy and brilliance. The three voices of the organ compete as equal soloists in the spirit of the Italian Baroque concertante style: bright figurations, clear harmonies, the exuberant vitality of a final toccata. Corresponds to Movement III of the companion Sonate en Forme de Trio, completing the structural parallel between the two works composed in the same month for the same dedicatee.
