Programme NotesNotice de programme
Quartet for Saxophones was written for the Clair-Obscur quartet. The opening statement of the unison theme contains the essence of all that is to follow in the three-movement form. The first movement alternates between the initial declamatory theme and more lyrical passages. The slow central movement is centred around a pulsating rhythmic cell which is similar to a heartbeat. The final Scherzo movement combines these aspects to finish with a final declamation of the initial theme.
The Unison ThemeLe Thème à l'Unisson The essence of all that followsL'essence de tout ce qui suit
The work opens with all four saxophones playing in unison — not harmony, not counterpoint, but the same notes, the same rhythm, the same voice multiplied by four. This is a powerful gesture: the full weight of the SATB quartet concentrated into a single line, presenting the thematic seed from which the entire work will grow. The declamatory character of this opening — bold, rhetorical, speech-like — establishes the work's fundamental expressive register before any differentiation between voices begins.
The programme note's claim that this opening contains "the essence of all that is to follow" is the key analytical statement: the work is organically unified. The lyrical passages of the first movement, the heartbeat cell of the second, and the Scherzo's energy are all latent in the opening unison statement. The return of the theme at the close — the final declamation — completes the arch.
The SATB Saxophone QuartetLe Quatuor de Saxophones SATB
The standard SATB saxophone quartet — soprano, alto, tenor, baritone — covers a range comparable to a string quartet. It is the dominant chamber ensemble in the saxophone world, with a large and growing repertoire. The four instruments share the same fundamental timbre but differ considerably in register and character: the soprano bright and penetrating, the alto warm and centred, the tenor rich and dark, the baritone deep and resonant. The opening unison statement — all four instruments on the same pitch material — exploits this range of timbral characters simultaneously.
