This Burning Sun of Grief and Memory… was written for and dedicated to the French Saxophone Trio Trimurti. The work is a further reworking of the theatre music which the composer wrote for Nevers, based on the appendix to Marguerite Duras's script for Hiroshima Mon Amour. The musical material is based on the central motive of this music, which represents both desire and grief which are tied together through a veil of remembrance and loss. The work is in several independent sections which are performed without pause, using all three instruments as independent voices in a typical "Trio Sonata" texture. This work could also be seen as a musical expression of performing and preparing the theatre piece, with each of the voices representing one of the individuals involved in the production.

The musical material of This Burning Sun… is drawn from the central motive of the Nevers theatre music — a motif that, according to the programme note, represents both desire and grief simultaneously. These are not separate states but entangled ones: the desire and grief of Duras's French actress in Hiroshima are inseparable from each other, each the condition of the other. She grieves because she desired; she desires because she grieves. The veil of remembrance through which both are perceived — memory as the medium of both love and mourning — is the third element that holds them together.
The title's burning sun is an image of this entanglement: grief and memory are not dark or cold but burning — present, intense, inescapable. The sun of Hiroshima, the sun of Nevers, the sun of memory: they burn with the same heat. The ellipsis (…) in the title signals the unfinished nature of grief — a sentence, and a feeling, that does not end.
The programme note offers an alternative reading: the work can be seen as a musical expression of performing and preparing the theatre piece, with each of the three voices representing one of the individuals involved in the original Nevers production. The three voices of the SAB trio are not abstract musical voices but human ones — the memory of specific people and a specific collaboration.
The SAB Saxophone TrioLe Trio de Saxophones SAB Soprano · Alto · BaritoneSoprano · Alto · Baryton
The SAB combination — soprano, alto, baritone — omits the tenor saxophone of the standard SATB quartet, creating a gap in the middle register that gives the ensemble a distinctive character: the soprano soars above, the baritone anchors below, and the alto moves between them with neither a tenor to crowd it nor a full quartet's weight. The programme note describes the three instruments as independent voices in a typical trio sonata texture — one role each, none subordinate to another, the three voices of Trimurti holding their equal stations.
